Watching what you eat while watching the game

February 5, 2010

Super Bowl Sunday means lots of football….and lots of high calorie, fattening foods.  When you’re on a diet or trying to eat healthy, it’s tough to navigate the buffet of snacks, pizza and wings, but Amy Virus, a registered dietician at Temple University’s Center for Obesity Research and Education, says that the worst thing you can do is deny yourself.

“Give in but control your cravings, and give your self structure,” she said. “What food do you crave? It may be better to just have it. If you ignore your craving you run the risk of eating around the craving – that is eating something similar, but less desirable – so you eat something else.  If you ate what you wanted in the beginning, you could have possibly saved yourself from overeating.”

If you’re watching what you eat, Virus says that it may be a slightly better option to stick to meats – lean lunchmeats or meatballs – because they have protein, which Virus says will make you feel fuller longer.  Because proteins in meat take longer to digest, you’ll end up eating less than you would if you stuck to chips and dip.
