Big week for public health

June 15, 2009

Friday was a big day for Temple’s public health department.  In addition to the World Health Organization officially declaring a Swine Flu pandemic, the Senate also ruled that the Food and Drug Administration would have a newly expanded role in tobacco regulation.

Luckily, Temple’s got two faculty members with expertise in both areas: Sarah Bass, whose research focuses on risk communication; and Jennifer Ibrahim, who studies tobacco regulation policy development and implementation.

Dr. Ibrahim was featured in the Philadelphia Inquirer and on WHYY radio, discussing her thoughts on the FDA’s new role, and why she thinks it doesn’t go far enough.

And Dr. Bass was also interviewed on WHYY the same day, to talk about the increase in Swine flu cases in the Philly area, and what “pandemic” really means.
